In a truly horrific fashion, we’ve delved into the minds of our scaredy-cat employees… Like a tell-tale heart, we won’t rest until we found the perfect hidden object games to frighten them! Let’s find out which scary games keep us up at night!

1) Kelly’s Pick: City Legends: The Witness in the Rye Collector’s Edition

I volunteer to be the first to get the socks scared off me! I find haunted farms, corn maze killers, and dark rituals to be ultra terrifying. I can’t handle being chased out of a crop field by a chainsaw-wielding maniac in real life. I’ll be safe by my computer, thank you. But I don’t have to miss out on the exhilarating fun; City Legends: The Witness In The Rye Collector’s Edition will scratch that horror itch.

The heebie-jeebies begin in Darkwood where the red rye fields grow and the harvest festival is quickly approaching. That scarecrow is certainly scaring more than just crows! Allow your curiosity to overcome you as talk of people going missing has begun circulating around town. Avoid becoming the next victim by investigating carefully, solving a series of riveting puzzles and mini-games, and finding the truth, no matter how sinister it really may be…

You may not want to personally participate in Darkwood’s next harvest but there’s certainly a surplus of goods in this Collector’s Edition. Play a bonus chapter after finishing the main game. Plus, get eerie wallpapers, concept art, a replayable minigame trove, and more. Find this game in the upcoming Haunted Horrors Vol. 3 – 15 Pack and the Fantastic Fables Vol. 6 – 5 Pack. 2) Magne’s Pick: Haunted Past: Realm of Ghosts Collector’s Edition

When asked what she was most afraid of, Magne answered “kenophobia”, which is the fear of open spaces. Think of it as the opposite of claustrophobia, like empty rooms or an encompassing void. So, it sounds like a large open rye field like what you find in City Legends: The Witness in the Rye Collector’s Edition would also spook her too!

But if you’re looking for a scary void to fill that horror void in your heart, why not step foot into a haunted house, rumored to be abandoned?

Come to the manor in the dead of night searching for answers about how the late owner, Emily, died. Everything’s soaked in moonlight blue and the spooky ambience is in full swing. There may even be a specter or two. As a standout feature, travel between the real world and the ghost realm to find things and solve puzzles that may not have been there before! Makes you wonder if the rooms are truly as empty as they seem or if someone or something is watching you…

So, if you get queasy when you look down an impossibly long, dark hallway like Magne, this ghostly game might be an extra challenge for you. However, if you think you can face these vengeful ghosts lurking in the veil between life and death, we recommend checking out Haunted Past: Realm of Ghosts Collector’s Edition, including bonus content too! 3) Amanda’s Pick: Mystical Riddles: Ship From Beyond Collector’s Edition

Lastly, Amanda let us know that she’s the most scared when faced with the helplessness of the ocean! The thought of being lost at sea with no salvation of land in sight terrifies her to no end! She made it very clear that there will be no cruises for her in the future… to which we asked: “What about being trapped on a haunted cruise ship with ghosts, missing persons, and an evil captain?”

Mystical Riddles: Ship From Beyond Collector’s Edition could be exactly what Amanda fears most! Come aboard the ship on the mission to shed some light on the recent disappearances of the people in Quietcape. Without spoiling the plot, let’s just say that you and your friends may be the only people alive on the ship, but we can’t even promise that for long… Reel in the suspense as you solve the mystery without being caught!

If your next journey is lost at sea aboard the haunted ship called Hope, find this game in the Dangers from Dreamland Vol. 2 – 10 Pack, Oceanic Odysseys – 10 Pack, and Mystical Riddles – 5 Pack, along with extra goodies like wallpapers and a bonus chapter included in the Collector’s Edition.

Sam Wilde had just published an article about a series of abductions throughout town when he received a letter with a dire warning, “Anna is so beautiful, isn’t she? You’re digging where you’re not supposed to. If you want to see her alive, come to the Goldvale Manor. Say nothing to anyone. If I see even one sign of the authorities, your beloved will be another work of art in my collection”

Fearing the worst and with no other options, Sam rushes to the Manor and soon realizes he’s nothing more than a pawn playing a twisted game of “catch me if you can” in a maze of horrors freak show. Oscar eagerly entices Sam through a multitude of doors and secret passageways. He tracks Sam’s every move through a series of cameras and speakers, constantly taunting him and toying with his emotions.

Sam knew he was dealing with a deranged psychopath, but nothing could have prepared him for the artwork he was about to witness next!…

GAMEPLAY FEATURES:

This is an old-school HOPA before the creation of a Jump Map. It does have a map that shows each location and where available tasks are located, but you’re going to have to travel with your own two virtual feet! This will be no easy task because you will be discovering secret passageways and unlocking dozens of doors within the manor, and unlike today’s HOPAs, the scenes won’t lock behind you as you progress. In fact, you will be revisiting these scenes throughout the game.

For me, this “free-roaming” aspect is the Adventure part of the Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure game that no longer exists! Having to keep track of or remember how to get back to a particular scene once you finally find an inventory item requires critical thought. In HOPAs of today, scenes are locked behind you, and you’re always pushed to move forward as if we’re in a cattle chute. How can a game be challenging or require critical thinking if you only have to keep track of 2-3 scenes at a time?

HIDDEN OBJECT SCENES:

There’s just something about old-school Hidden Objects Scenes that made them seem more authentic, and they always served a purpose. Somehow they were able to hide the objects in plain sight, yet you had to scour the scene several times to find the objects because they blended items strategically into the scenery. Magicindie Softworks found the Goldilocks sweet spot with the Hidden Object Scenes in Brink of Consciousness; not too many, not too few, just right!

As I stated above, the HO scenes in older games always had a purpose. They were designed to make the player feel as though they were actually searching through a pile of random junk in search of missing parts or a much-needed inventory item. Several HO scenes are repeated from previous chapters so if you can’t figure out what you’re supposed to do next, revisit previous scenes in search of another HO scene.

MINI-GAME PUZZLES:

Puzzles had a purpose too. Every mini-game opens intricate locks or turns on electrical panels. Most of the mini-games are mechanical-type puzzles where you adjust pressure gauges or select weights that equal a specific setting. What I loved about these puzzles was that every puzzle was doable without having to refer to a 20-page walkthrough! Most are solved using common sense or simple addition. They are still challenging, and you will feel a sense of pride when you solve them. There were some really unique mini-games, some of which I haven’t seen offered in any of the newer games!

Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome will absolutely delight HOPA fans who are longing for the adventure aspect that has been missing in newer games. The lack of a Jump Map may be a turnoff for those not interested in a challenge. But for those willing to give it a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how entertaining a HOPA was and can be! You will be completely vested in the gameplay, and, like me, will wonder why developers took the Adventure out of our Hidden Object Adventure games!

Journalist Eleanor Gray has always dreamed of writing her own book, so she moves to a quaint village called Silverwood Bay, where she discovers a note that gives her all the inspiration she needs!

I’ve played hundreds of hidden object games over the years; you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ’em all…but then, along comes a new game from Boomzap to prove me wrong!

There’s such a variety of hidden object styles, in-game puzzles, and interactions that make it impossible to get bored. Under most circumstances, I’m usually getting pretty bored towards the end of a HOG, but Silverwood Bay had me hook, line, and sinker, and I was disappointed when it ended.

There are 28 Main Chapters and 7 Collector’s Edition Bonus Chapters. Each scene has 3 extra items to find, shown as Silhouetted Shapes, to the left of the inventory bar.

Each Hidden Object scene has a variety of HO variants within the same scene. Some may be simple listed items, some require matching similar objects, while others might be a simple task (fix the sign) or require you to look behind a specific object. You may have to find multiples of an object and place them in a specific area, such as finding multiple umbrellas and putting them into a stand or finding several roses to place in a vase.

There are several in-game puzzles that are related to a particular object; they aren’t just random puzzles. My favorite puzzles were the ones that you rotate & swap newspaper articles, journal entries, or missing book pages. I also enjoyed the Swap & Rotate puzzles, Spot the Differences, and finding specific areas in a scene that match a square sample. The only games I didn’t care for were the “painting” and “cleaning” puzzles because all you are doing is holding the mouse button while swiping the scene.

Boomzap hit the mark with this Hidden Object Game! The mysteries Eleanor Gray discovers about this mysterious couple unfold with each new chapter scene, and every scene is jam-packed with a variety of hidden objects and relaxing puzzles. If you are a HOG fan, you’re going to love this entertaining game!
